Playing Mantis!

Now I can customize cars to my heart's content, and not worry about cutting up a car body worth $50.00!!! Even though they're just "pull-back action" toys, the bodies are perfect fit for several slotcar chassis. And they have several of the classic bodies available, like the VW Baja Bug, Cobra, Nomad, and Willys, just to name a few. I'll be working on 2 or 3 projects in the near future, both for my local 3/8 mile oval track. They don't race NASCAR there (even though I will), so I need some Classic Modifieds (Willys) Late Model Modifieds (90's Stocker) and Open Wheel Modifieds (anything that'll clip on a chassis). If these come out good, I will make several bodies detailed after the local Oval Warrior Heroes, to recreate Saturday Night Stock Car Fever at home!

You can also repaint these bodies and make your favorite car without ruining a classic slotcar. For Stock Cars, there are a lot of cool choices. They have Buick Grand Nationals for classic NASCAR or go wild and customize for Super Mods. 70's Stock Cars look like Chevys, Acme Stock Cars (look like Petty's Plymouth from the late 70's) and a Dodge Charger too. They have a classic Ford Fairlane Stock Car from the late 60's and the Dodge Daytona Hi-wing Stockcar from about '70. They also have several of the big pony cars that they run on Saturday Nights. Camaros, the big Mustangs (70's), GTOs, Challengers, Chevelles, Hemi Cuda's, and Javelins most in the 70's vintage. Also, several of these cars were used in Trans-Am racing, along with the '57 Hardtop and Convertibles and Grand Sport Corvettes, and Cobras. For racing this decade they have a Dodge Viper too. And you can make any of these into a dragster - including the Willys and '57 Nomad. In short - they have a lot of cool bodies to choose from - what a great thing!

The 90's Stock Car I got will become a Late Model Modified, slant nose, slab side, with a huge rear spoiler. (If you think this is Custom, you should see my Sling Shot Dragster!) I'm using pictures from Circle Track magazine and actual cars from the local track as a guide, nothing too fancy yet. The Willys will become a classic Modified Coupe from the 60's - no fenders, open wheels, tall radiator, rounded windows. Right now I'm using some pictures I found on the Internet - I think I used keywords like "modified stock car". Here's a picture of the stock 90's Stock Car (T-Bird), before the cutting begins!

Let me tell you where I got some of the other parts. There are some Hot Wheels with usable, realistic parts. I wanted a driver for my cars - if they're driving around my track, I want someone at the wheel! They make an Indy (CART - F1) car that has a plastic driver - look for Hot Wheels 500 (#26020). The engine for my Sling Shot was from some rather goulish car, but you can get 2 for the price of one with the Way 2 Fast (#27082). Unfortunately these engines use headers cast into the metal chassis, and I forgot where I got my plastic ones (the rear-engined rail, maybe?). The engine for my Open Wheel Modified (only needed the sides) came from the Slidout, a World of Outlaws type (#26022). This car has some other usable parts, the side-nerf bars are plastic, maybe the front wing and seat, I keep all the plastic pieces. I used a Racing Champions Funny Car frame for my Sling Shot, not perfect, but after mounting the engine and gas tank, it should look OK. I wanted to use the engine from the Funny Car too, but it was too small. One more part that I'm on the lookout for is a nice chrome aircleaner - most of the stockcars have one sticking out of the hood. I found the Air Cleaners!!! Well they're really speakers - but whoever heard of chrome speakers? And there are 5 of them too - look for a pickup truck, customized with the sound system that would drown out the cars at the race track! (#26039) There are a lot of other usable parts too, front bumper & grille, windshield, seats, steering wheel, fuel injected engine top, and squares with ridges (I don't know what yet, but I'll keep 'em). The one I made is the chromed runner tab from a regular model; shaping it was a challenge. If you have any other parts sources for detailing, I would appreciate an Email!
