The Peace River meanders from near the center of Florida to Charlotte Harbor on the south west coast shore. 57 miles long and usually no wider than a couple hundred feet, in the winter there are lots of chances to walk your canoe. Here is a map of the route taken during the Fossil Floats, Arcadia to the Nocatee bridge, about 8 miles. Another good trip is the 8 miles north, from Brownsville to Arcadia, I've had a chance to canoe it, but not look for fossils yet. The scenery is beautiful, Cypress with their knees ringing the trunk, willows weeping into the river, and bromeliads hanging from branches. Most of the critters you see are aquatic, turtles sunning themselves on logs, alligator gar, Plecos, and even baby flounder 30 miles upriver from the harbor! Although the Plecs are pretty, they are another example of people with aquariums that get bored with the hobby and dump the fish in the river. I don't know what kind of ecological danger these fish may cause, but it is another reason people should think about their house plants and pets before they become pests. |
